GOVERNOR'S LETTER

December 2024

As we prepare for the holiday season, let us take the time to reflect on the blessings that we all receive through our involvement in this Lions organization. From the service that we perform to the gratitude that is shared from those We Serve, our mission is a fulfilling exercise in human dignity and humanitarian respect.

In keeping with that service, it is important to remember that our founding principle is service to others. We can raise money and we can support programs to the benefit of our communities, but the true service you do cannot be valued in dollars given. The blessings we receive far outweigh the effort we give.

As we get closer to the second half of the Lions year, we also need to take a look at each of our clubs and ask ourselves, are we growing, are we developing new leaders, are we revitalizing our long-term members and are we engaging our new members so that they can play a bigger role in the future of your clubs? Your club’s future depends on not only your growth in numbers, but your growth in knowledge and sharing that knowledge with the next generation of Lions.

As the new year approaches, now would be a great time to reach out to a potential new member and get them involved in your club.  It’s time to share those experiences with more people and the result will be greater service to our communities. Many hands make light work, so let’s share in that responsibility together.

During this thanksgiving holiday, we took time to reconnect with family and friends. We also took time to enjoy the harvest. Our harvest as Lions is in the satisfaction of a job well done and reflecting on the profound impact that our service has had to those we serve. The harvest sustains us and is a driving force to continue our work and find new ways to make that service more impactful.

We are doing great things in District 10. Let’s keep up the great work! I hope your holidays are filled with joy and peace. Seasons greetings to all!
Scott Kwarciany
District Governor

Become a puppy raiser!
Have you considered becoming a puppy raiser for a Future Leader Dog? The care these puppies receive in their first year is critical for their success as guide dogs, but we can’t do it without you.
As one of the amazing puppy raisers at Leader Dogs for the Blind, Margaret knows how the love and attention she gives to these puppies makes an impact. She has raised 18 Future Leader Dogs and hosted two Leader Dog moms, helping bring countless puppies into the world.
Margaret shared her heartfelt experience: “Volunteering at Leader Dog has been a wonderful way to change the lives of people who are blind or have low vision. It gives me courage and a new perspective on life.”
Our affectionate puppies are eager to meet their future raisers! As a volunteer puppy raiser, you’ll nurture a Future Leader Dog for one year, teaching them essential skills before their formal guide dog training begins.
Your dedication will help shape these puppies into life-changing companions for individuals who are blind or low vision. I encourage you to apply today!
Sincerely,
Vijay Joshi – Puppy Development Manager of Host and Raiser Experience

Marquette Lions Club ReturnablesMarquette Lions Club is introducing a new project during downtown events to keep MI Returnable’s out of city recycling or Marquette’s landfill and initiate a proactive approach to collecting cans & bottles that have a Michigan deposit.

Funded by several generous grants, a distinctive new container bright yellow & blue with Lions Club logo will be found in collaboration with city recycling & trash containers throughout the downtown during the Blueberry fest & Harbor fest. This will enable those attending for responsible recycling and be a committed member to their community & planet.

The club’s income from returnable’s provides for community needs such as grants for eye exams/eye glasses, food pantries, families with children fighting cancer, Bay Cliff and much more.
For those interested in making a personal donation of their returnable’s please call 906-250-1596.

Membership Packets
As Global Membership Chair, I request packets from the International.  When new members are posted on the International site, we print out certificates and letters from the Governor for both sponsor and new member.  These are then mailed to the secretary or president of the club, and usually arrive within two days.
The packets also include information on Lions, a discount certificate from the Lions store, pins for both new member and sponsor, and a pen for the new member.
If you would like to receive the packets early, just email wnrowe@charter.net with the name of the new member, the name of the sponsor, and the date of the induction.

Patridge Creek Farms online survey for expansion into your area:
Please click below to fill out a survey to identify local people who are interested in creating community gardens, building a local food system, and working with Farm to School education. This will be followed up with a club visit and hopefully bring in local food champions for an open meeting to see how we can work with them to strengthen our local food education and food systems.

Thank you,
VDG Dan Perkins

Lions Build Accessible Gardens at School
This past weekend The D-10 Lions joined forces with the Lakeview Garden Committee at the Lakeview Elementary School in Negaunee to build accessible ADA compliant pathways to the 20 garden beds in the Courtyard garden area. The crew installed 250 feet of 5-8’ wide brick lined paths infilled with 90,000# of compacted 3FA crusher fines that had to be wheel barrowed in from an outside parking lot through the building into the central courtyard.
This event was an example of how many hands can get a large project done in a relatively short period of time. It was an opportunity for our younger Lions to step up and put their youthful strength and energy into public service. At least 2 young adults will sign up to be Lions in our Ishpeming Club from their participation on this project. If you want to grow your club, take on a large project way outside your comfort zone and beg your friends, neighbors, and kids to help get it done.
