Lawrence R. Tuttle
September 29, 1934 – January 14, 2010
Lawrence R. Tuttle, 75, a lifelong Curtis/Germfask area resident, died at the Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace on Thursday, January 14, 2010. The Tuttle family was the 2nd family to get a land grant in Portage Twp. which started their farm, home, and family.
Lawrence was born the fourth child of Ernest & Pauline (Brockman) Tuttle on September 29, 1934 in Germfask. He attended the Curtis School and then graduated from Newberry High School in the class of 1952. He started his own business, Lawrence Tuttle Logging, upon graduation and grew to have over 20 employees at one time. He retired from the business in 2000. On February 25, 1955 he married the former Yvonne Seamen in Germfask and they made their home a short distance from where he was born and raised.
Lawrence was a charter member and was instrumental in forming the Lions Club in Curtis. He served in several different capacities for the club. He was twice elected President, was a board member and went on to serve as Deputy District Governor for Lions International twice. Lawrence also helped in forming the July 4 Parade in Curtis, and he started the "turtle races", a popular activity and fund raiser for the club. He was a very active and dedicated Lion in Curtis for many years. Lawrence is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, and 2 grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Yvonne, and children: Deborah (Herb) Hazen of Allegan; Raymond (Julie) Tuttle of Salt Lake City, UT; Karen Blank of Curtis; Ronda (Arthur, Jr.) Nicholson of Curtis, and Steven Tuttle of Germfask. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and siblings Donald (Betty) Tuttle of Gulliver and Thelma Gray of Mayfield, MI.
Services will be held on Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry at 3:00 PM with Pastor John Troyer officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 1:00 - 3:00 PM for a visitation at the funeral home. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Curtis in the spring.
